GigaIO Technology Featured in the Student Cluster Competition at SC18
Students from the University of Warsaw test out GigaIO’s newest alpha product, FabreX™
CARLSBAD, Calif. – Feb. 12, 2019 – GigaIO, Inc., an innovator of datacenter network architecture and connectivity solutions, was pleased to sponsor a team in the annual Student Cluster Competition at SC18, an international conference for high-performance computing. Students from the University of Warsaw, Poland (“Warsaw Team”) incorporated GigaIO’s alpha product, FabreX™ into their self-designed supercomputing cluster, marking the team’s fourth cluster competition event.
The Student Cluster Competition originated in 2007 at SC07 in Reno, Nev. The competition, now heading into its thirteenth year, offers undergraduate students from around the world an opportunity to experiment with the latest high-performance computing technology. Over the course of 48 hours, 14 teams race to achieve the greatest amount of supercomputing performance while keeping clusters below a 3,000-watt power maximum.
Using parallel processing, students were expected to optimize workloads across a series of six common high-performance computing applications, including OpenMC, also referred to as an open source Monte Carlo simulation, the LINPACK Benchmark, High-Performance Conjugate Gradients (HPCG) Benchmark and a mystery application disclosed on the first day of the competition.
“Working with GigaIO was an excellent opportunity for Warsaw Team,” says Dr. Marek Michalewicz, Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Mathematical and Computational Modelling (ICM) at the University of Warsaw. “GigaIO offers cutting-edge high-performance computing technology, so it was a privilege to be among the first group to experiment with their newest product, FabreX.”
FabreX is a hyper-performance networking solution that delivers improved resource utilization and user flexibility. The technology’s high-composability and low latency capabilities address today’s demanding workloads that require varying numbers of GPUs to run quickly and efficiently.
“Warsaw Team was smart to engage with GigaIO’s technology in the 2018 Student Cluster Competition,” says Dan Olds, partner at Gabriel Consulting Group. “GigaIO offers some of the most advanced interconnect in the world today, and the competition was a first step towards successfully bringing FabreX to market.”
